SADER Jalisco Continues to Count Agricultural Damages from Hurricane “Nora”

Agricultural damage has been identified in 22 Jalisco municipalities involving about 8,000 hectares.

The Jalisco Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER,) continues with its task of collecting information and verifying the damage caused by this year’s weather, both due to the impact of Hurricane Nora, and due to excess humidity and hailstorms in several regions of the Jalisco countryside.

In this regard, the head of the office of the agency, Salvador Álvarez García, said that the figures at the moment indicate that there are claims in 22 municipalities of the entity in an area of about 8,000 hectares, which is the reason for an exhaustive check to accurately determine the areas with total losses, and then to proceed to the amounts of compensation to each affected producer.

The official said that the final determination of the affected properties requires coordination with the municipal authorities so that a file is integrated per producer for a better evaluation of each case.

At the moment, the data collected refers to damage to corn and rice crops in the case of grains; as well as plantain in the coastal municipalities affected by the hurricane force winds of Nora.

The SADER Jalisco Agricultural Insurance Program has funds of 20 million pesos. The compensation amounts to 2,000 pesos per hectare in the case of grains, and 3,000 pesos for fruit crops.

The regions affected by the Nora meteor are the Costa, the Sierra de Amula, Lagunas and the Sierra Occidental.

A significant part of the production of the Jalisco countryside is concentrated in the three regions with important products, such as livestock, tropical fruits, cereals, coffee, fish and aquaculture production, and nightshades (various chili peppers and tomatoes), among others.

SADER Jalisco will remain vigilant in this area until the end of the hurricane season.
