Help Out Some Kids with the Adopt A Scholar Program by Amigos de La Cruz

Amigos de La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a non-profit organization that serves their community in various ways, including street cleaning, maintenance and beautification; recycling and provision of garbage cans; stream, highway, and beach clean-up; Kid’s Club Program and Summer School, and children’s dental care.

Due to the pandemic, Amigos de La Cruz is providing the only in-person instruction in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.  They only wish to have a larger space and more teachers so that they could take more students - there's a long waiting list to get into Amigos Kids Club.

Just last week their Adopt a Scholar Campaign was launched, with the campaign running through September 25. Sponsors who wish to improve the life of a child will receive periodic letters, samples of their child's work, and progress reports. This will be a great way to get to know and connect with the children and families of La Cruz.

Please visit the Adopt a Scholar site and choose a kid to sponsor for the year. There are so many kids that are relying on Kids Club for educational and social foundations. It is a great way to give them a hand up in building their future.

$300 USD will sponsor one child at the Kids Club, for one full academic school year, from mid-September to mid-July. You can sponsor a child (or children,) or make a general donation.

Also, they can offer a US, Canadian, or Mexican tax credit, just let them know what you need.

Kids Club Update

We are getting into the groove at Kids Club as everyone is working out the schedules and being placed into the appropriate learning clusters. With the new arrangement of the workspace and increased demand, we have made it possible to invite another 5 students into the Kids Club for a total of 35 students now.

Here are some of the things we have begun working on this week:The "Emergente" group  (ages 6-8) is with Lilly and John. They have been focusing on their fine motor skills, handwriting, recognizing and practicing basic number sequencing with a "musical chairs" activity, fun songs, and of course simply practicing their handwriting. They are also doing similar basic letter recognition and sounds, as well practicing their handwriting in their Spanish class.

The "Processo" group  (ages 8-10) are with Abraham learning more complex numeration and decimal placement as well as telling time and solving time-related riddles and word problems. They also learned about library classification and organization, and have started a unit project on developing and branding a product as a vehicle to practice their grammar and writing.

The "Avanzado" group is working with Galvis and have already started reading and analyzing some complex non-fiction and informational texts and jumped right into writing paragraphs that integrate specific vocabulary lists they have learned. This group includes many of our returning students from last year and from Open Learning that are building on some of the skills we started last year in mathematics: long division and multiplication of decimals.

In addition to their support with the learning clusters, Lilly and Allegra have started on their respective arts and movement classes. Allegra is teaching the kids about the "7 Bellas Artes" and the associated components, allowing the students to express their favorites. Lilly has begun the preparation for the Holiday Show in December that will include a variety of classic, modern, and cultural pieces of dance, music and costumes to enjoy.
