Successful “Glasses for Students” Campaign provides 14 school children with eyeglasses provided by generous donors.

Thanks to the cooperation of the primary school principals, teachers, parents, and the local parish church, the word was spread throughout the community to reach children ages 5-15 that have vision problems and need glasses. There were 2 days of pre-screening which allowed more than 90 local children to take the preliminary vision exam.

Dr. Mario Mora of Guadalajara, who provides his services through several government programs, provided a complete exam for all those that needed it. He also provided a large selection of frames and lenses at reduced cost. This campaign was supported by and the glasses paid for by Amigos de La Cruz, Banderas Bay Charities, and generous donors to benefit local children in need of glasses.

Thank You Dr. Mario, and Thank You Donors!!

Coming up from January 24 to 27, a dental care clinic will be held. Drs. Gordon Croft and Don Cook will be leading a team of dentists, hygienists and dental assistants from Boise, Idaho+, together with the participation of Dr Andrea Muro and her orthodontist husband from Guadalajara.  A special thank you also to Dr Adrian Malja and his former assistant Lucia Ortega for their assistance with donating time and materials for the clinic.
Starting next week at the Kid’s Club facility, English classes taught by America Garcia will begin Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm. Classes are open to all children 10-15 years of age. Come in to sign up.

Also next week, Kid’s Club will be having a party for the Day of the Dead on Monday, November 1, with a costume contest, games, prizes, hot chocolate, pan de muerto, and a showing of the film “Casper the Friendly Ghost.” There will not be classes on Tuesday in recognition of the holiday.

And on another note, the Sunday La Cruz Farmer’s Market will be opening November 7th, bringing vendors from around the community to sell their authentic products and delicious foods. The market also provides various workshops for adults and children such as yoga, and live music every Sunday. It is expected to continue through April 24.

Kids Club would like to welcome and recognize the newest member to our team, Andres Leyton. He recently arrived in La Cruz and plans to stay around for a while. Meanwhile he has graciously volunteered to help out with our dance and movement classes and has a few other projects he would like to do with local children. It has been three weeks now that students have been attending in-person classes at the local primary school, two half-days weekly. Schedules have shifted a bit as some students attend in the mornings and some in the afternoons as well as attending different days. This has required some juggling around with students coming to Kid’s Club classes as their schedule permits. Adapting and being flexible to these changes, although hectic at times, has enabled all students to continue with their learning virtually unphased.

This past week the advanced group continued giving feedback on natural numbers and decimals addition, subtractions and combined operations, as well as reading and writing of quantities. In Spanish they practiced writing sentences and short paragraphs including elements of the subject, verb, predicates, indirect and direct objects. They are also practicing reading and comprehension activities.

The process group started workingon division with one and two digits, we continued with addition and subtraction of 3-4 digit numbers, as well as writing, grammar, and reading. Also, they worked on creating full sentences and parts of speech.

The emergent group has been focusing on addition and subtraction using a number line up to 30 and completed a color by numbers worksheet with mixed addition and subtraction problems. They are still practicing the alphabet and phonics as the foundations of reading.

In art, the students are learning the anatomy of the human face and practicing how to sketch and draw expressions.

As mentioned before, the dance and movement class has been working with our new volunteer Andres, assisting Lilly with the winter presentation as well as doing some improvisation exercises with the children.
