Three Suspects Likely Responsible for the 2,344 Hectare Fire in Los Volcanes

The work carried out by the Environmental Crimes Investigation Unit of the State Prosecutor's Office yielded favorable results with the capture in flagrante delicto (caught red-handed) of three subjects

who were already linked to their probable responsibility in the fire of 2,344 hectares of the Los Volcanes.  This natural area for the protection of flora and fauna is part of the Bosque de la Primavera, and includes the municipalities of Tala and Tlajomulco. The fires have threatened not only the environment, but also the biodiversity of the area and the health of an entire population.

The suspects are José Antonio “N,” Carlos Moreno “N,” and Ricardo “N,” who were captured by the Investigative Police who were carrying out a firefighting operation in the area. Officials surprised the suspects on May 13, while they were allegedly generating a brushfire in the area, and  managed to secure two gallons of hydrocarbon, two lighters, 500 agave plants, and a tool for planting them in the forest.

It is important to point out that based on the test data gathered, it is presumed that they have a role in the fires that have been occurring recently near that location, with which the Protected Natural Area of the Forest has been constantly and deliberately affected. It has been necessitated in La Primavera to implement exhaustive containment and control operations in which various units participated, including Semadet, the Federal Electricity Commission, Civil Protection of Guadalajara and Tlajomulco, as well as the use of the 5 Witari helicopters, generating an intense mobilization of emergency forces, events in which some brigade members were injured.

By virtue of the foregoing, José Antonio "N," Carlos Moreno "N," and Ricardo "N" were at the disposal of the Judge of Control and Orality of the Tenth Judicial District headquartered in Tequila, before whom the detention control hearing was verified, and said authority ratified the detention as legal.

In the indictment, the Public Ministry of the Environmental Crimes Investigation Unit asserted the evidence collected that made it clear that their acts were planned and their intentions were fraudulent.

Given the risk that these people represent against this protected natural area, which has diverse vegetation and fauna, as well as the risk to a whole population of people  and having a negative impact on their health, the court was required justified preventive detention, which was ratified for one year as a precautionary measure.

Given that the environment is a protected legal asset, and fires can endanger the health of an entire population, the State Prosecutor's Office reaffirms its commitment to society to continue implementing these operations to capture whoever is responsible for the fires in the forests of Jalisco. The public is urged to report this type of reprehensible acts at the offices of Calle 14 number 2550, in the Industrial area of Guadalajara, as well as by calling the emergency number.

You are invited to report wildfires toll free at 800-4623634 or 911.
