Forest Brigades Start Landslide Prevention Actions in La Primavera Forest

This Thursday, forest brigades began soil conservation works that seek to prevent landslides within the areas most affected by the forest fires that occurred during this dry season,

as well as to restore and conserve the affected areas and minimize soil degradation in La Primavera Forest.

The first area to intervene corresponds to the places affected by the Los Volcanes fire, for which forest combatants from the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet), the Decentralized Public Organization (OPD) Bosque La Primavera, and the Unit of Civil Protection and Tlajomulco firefighters began with ecological restoration work in approximately 400 hectares with the purpose of encouraging, with the onset of the rains, the forest beginning its natural regeneration cycles.

According to the impact and severity analysis carried out, through which the potential risk areas were determined after the forest fires, the areas to intervene were identified through soil restoration actions to reduce and control soil loss due to water erosion. The intention is to reduce the speed and volume of runoff in favor of the infiltration of water, in the areas identified with the highest risk of material being carried over to urban areas.

During the following weeks, the forestry brigades will continue these prevention works. They will be constructing stone barriers arranged in level curves, which reduce the speed of runoff and promote water infiltration, also benefitting the ecosystem in terms of water quality.  They will also construct stone dams accommodated to slow runoff, retain soil, and allow a gradual flow of surface runoff.

Carrying out these actions are Semadet, the OPD Bosque La Primavera, the State Unit of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Jalisco (UEPCYBJ), the Municipal Units of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Zapopan and Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, as well as the San Agustín Ejidal Brigade.

For the Government of Jalisco, the safety of the people of Jalisco is of utmost importance, which is why prevention works will continue prior to the start of the rainy season. Citizens are called upon to remain alert to any incident on official channels.
