Friday Forest Fire Report June 18, 2021

The National Forestry Commission (Conafor) reports on the situation of the forest fires at 11:00 am, so that the public has the details of these events and knows the actions that the authorities carried out for its control and liquidation.

Conafor reports that today, Mexico has 32 active forest fires; 21 fires in Chihuahua, 7 in Durango, 2 in Sonora, one in Baja California, and one in Coahuila.

The entity of Chihuahua reports 21 active fires, of which 13 show 100% control, six more are controlled between 70% and 90% and only 2 report less than 70% control.

The municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo has the highest number of active fires with 10, then Guachochi with 4, Balleza 3, Carichí 2 and the municipalities of Maguarichi and Temósachic one fire each.

In the case of the fire that occurs in Temósachic, the fire affects the Area of Protection of Flora and Fauna Tutuaca, however this fire reaches 70% control and 60% settlement.

A total of 619 people are working in the fight against fires, of which 163 belong to Conafor, 8 to the State Government, and 448 to other entities, among owners and holders of forest lands, municipal brigades, the Secretariat of National Defense, volunteers, amongst others.

Likewise, it is reported that this morning, a brigade from the state of Jalisco arrived in Chihuahua to join the fight along with the one from Durango that was already in the state, and three technicians specialized in fire management, two from the North Regional Fire Management Center who will assist in the planning for fire management.

Additionally, the arrival of a brigade of 10 combatants from the state of Nuevo León is expected.

It is reported that human activities are the main causes of these fires, primarily due to agricultural, illegal, and smoking activities. It should be noted that in Chihuahua the meteorological conditions of high temperatures and wind, the rugged topography of the mountains, and the dryness of the vegetation, are factors that increase the risk for the fire to spread rapidly and thus make control difficult.

Conafor invites the general population to avoid the use of fire in the field and to report forest fires to 800 462 3634 or 911.
