Free Medical Arbitration Commission Serves Jalisco for Twenty Years

The Medical Arbitration Commission prepares technical medical opinions and resolution of doctor-patient disputes completely free of charge.

Two decades after the start of its activities and to commemorate its 20th anniversary of creation, the Medical Arbitration Commission in Jalisco (CAMEJAL,) held an analysis forum where it highlighted the fundamental work it carries out for the resolution of conflicts in the provision of health care services through the culture of peace.

The actions taken by CAMEJAL have contributed to improving the quality of health services in Jalisco, by detecting areas of opportunity for improvement, both in the public and private sectors, especially in the international context due to the presence of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Secretary of Health, Fernando Petersen Aranguren, highlighted the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and the commitment to dignify health services in the entity. “It is the right of the patient to be always well informed to fully decide which path is best for you, and ethics is a fundamental part of that relationship. It is to be celebrated that through CAMEJAL there are agile and flexible conciliation mechanisms, with fewer requirements, which ultimately cost less economically and emotionally for service providers, users, and even their families because they also accompany their loved ones on this path of conciliation.”

Petersen Aranguren celebrated that CAMEJAL has these spaces for dialogue, contributing to enrich conciliation policies. In addition, he took advantage of the forum to reiterate that the COVID-19 pandemic continues and the guard should not be lowered, and urged people to continue using face masks, maintain social distancing, and put into practice the already known measures.

Francisco Martín Preciado Figueroa, Commissioner of Medical Arbitration in Jalisco spoke about the relevance of this event and its mandate throughout these years: “the work of CAMEJAL is not only medical arbitration, it is much broader and comprehensive… the powers of the commission ensure that resolutions are given within a framework of protection of the right to health. The Government of Jalisco aims to achieve the highest quality standards in the provision of health services.” The commissioner thanked his predecessor counterparts and the entire team that has worked and contributed to the organization.

CAMEJAL supports the Federal and State Attorney General's Offices as well as the Federal and State Health Institutions in issuing technical medical opinions prepared by experts from various health areas, who free of charge contribute their knowledge in the analysis of complaints.

At the national level, CONAMED celebrated its 25th anniversary last June, and in 27 states across the country it has a mirror commission to resolve conflicts between health professionals and the population through the application of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
