Governor of Jalisco Urges Following of Rules to Avoid Further Restrictions

Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramírez affirmed that the risk of COVID-19 infections is still latent in the entity and proof of this is confirmed with an increase of 62% in active cases, and 17% in hospitalizations.

Positivity has also exceeded 5 % as has not happened in several weeks. Given this and the presence in the entity of the Delta India variant that is more contagious, the president asked the Jalisco residents not to lower their guard, continue to wear face masks, take shelter in case of symptoms, and get tested. He also announced that the number of tests will be increased, and compliance with sanitary measures in businesses will be reviewed in each sector.

After noting that there will be no additional measures to those established, Alfaro Ramírez explained that acting preventively and in advance at this time is key, since it will allow the state strategy to continue to produce positive results and continue the economic reactivation and the programming of the return to face-to-face classes. He also made a call to businessmen to reiterate compliance with protocols and application of sanitary measures, warning that whoever does not comply will be subject to the definitive closure of businesses.

“We do not want to take additional restrictive measures, but if people and especially businesses do not help us to comply with the established rules, we will not allow this problem to get out of control again. The strategy that Jalisco has followed has had a basic principle that has generated the possibility of being successful with anticipation and foresight,” indicated the Governor.

With data exposed in the Health Board since March 2020, it has been shown that the vaccinated population presents a high level of protection, however, only 42% of the state population has it, leaving the rest vulnerable.

Given this scenario and the presence of the Delta variant of the coronavirus in the entity, Alfaro Ramírez will propose to the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a restructuring of the vaccination strategy that, through a formal request, will seek to focus immunization on specific groups and areas with higher risk.

Accompanied by the rector of the University of Guadalajara, Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí, in his message to the Governor of Jalisco reported that detection tests will be increased as part of a strategy to track and search for cases.

“Many people did not go to be vaccinated. In population groups such as those between 50 and 60 years old, we barely reach 50% of this group, we cannot lose sight of the fact that by getting vaccinated we avoid the risk of a very high percentage. The effectiveness of the vaccine has been demonstrated,” he pointed out.

Enrique Alfaro also pointed out that there is a presence in Jalisco of the Delta variant, with which 60% of infections worldwide are associated. According to officials, the Delta variant has extremely high contagion risks.

"Let us comply with this basic responsibility that we can guarantee we are going to take measures, increase our capacity to apply tests, and finally… that we do not forget the use of face masks… We want them to once again comply with the protocols and health measures that are established.”

He stated in his message that resorts such as Puerto Vallarta, Cihuatlán, La Huerta, and the coast of Jalisco itself must comply with current sanitary provisions.

Rector of the UDG, Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí, reiterated that Jalisco is once again anticipating prevention measures, without the need to take more severe alternatives at this time.

He added that the data shows that vaccines do work, since current cases are in people who do not have a full vaccination schedule, or do not yet have the application at all.

"The recreational part is more sacrificial than the educational part. I think that we have to continue taking care with protocols.”
