Governor Enrique Alfaro Presents Equality Pact for Equal Conditions in the Workplace

The state of Jalisco has been dedicated to providing equality between men and women, and to ensuring this in the workplace.

In order to have equal opportunities for their professional and personal growth within a company or workplace, the Government of Jalisco in partnership with the National Chamber of Commerce of Guadalajara (CANACO,) on Thursday presented the project "Pactemos por la Igualdad," which consists of five agreements and 22 actions aimed at creating a new culture of equality in the productive sectors of Jalisco. It seeks to recognize the efforts of companies and work centers that ensure decent and equal employment based on skills and not gender.

This project is promoted by the Secretariat for Substantive Equality between Women and Men (SISEMH,) said Governor Enrique Alfaro during the presentation, as part of the state public policies that stand out at the national level and that demonstrate with facts that the principle of equity and equality between women and men are present in all areas and sectors of Jalisco, thereby promoting a true cultural transformation from the roots.

“Today I can affirm that time is proving us right, because having built a secretariat and having achieved this idea of transversality, that is, that the substantive equality agenda weighs in on the economic agenda, the social agenda, the infrastructure agenda, and the health and education agenda. That is transversality, and thanks to the construction of that model, today we can see as a reality projects as important as that of support for women with the passage of public transport (drivers) for women,” highlighted Alfaro Ramírez.

Likewise, the Jalisco president reiterated his willingness to dialogue to continue promoting public policies and actions in favor of women, but through concertation and not violence.

Raúl Uranga Lamadrid, president of CANACO Guadalajara, said that it is necessary to recognize women in all areas, particularly in business and economics, for which he celebrated the implementation of "Pactemos por la Igualdad," which will be an important reference for women to have free and inclusive environments in the entity.

“In a world that evolves at breakneck speed, achieving the inclusion of women alongside men is not only key and central, it is urgent and pressing. If in Mexico we did not waste the talent and potential of our women, as we do today, we could achieve in just 4 years the Gross Domestic Product of what it would take us in 10, and at a growth rate of 5% per year, because only in the AMG is the participation rate of women in the economy 45%,” highlighted the business leader.

Meanwhile, the secretary Paola Lazo Corvera explained that the project is made up of five agreements and 22 actions aimed at achieving equal treatment between women and men in all areas, thereby contributing to the state policy on gender equality.

“Numerous studies have shown discriminatory practices on the basis of gender, all of them are carried out in the workplace, and all of them represent negative impacts on the working conditions and quality of life of all the women who live them. We are talking about unequal wages, institutional  barriers so as not to occupy managerial positions, and considering all these data and factors, is why we developed this project ‘Pacteamos por la Igualdad.’ That is why today we want to agree with their authorities, with their companies, and that we build paths of equality,” commented the head of the SISEMH.

The actions proposed by the five agreements are strategies that must be adapted to the circumstances of each company and/or workplace that seek to dignify the work of all people. Each of the pacts contemplates addressing key issues that impact gender inequality in the workplace.

The pacts are as follows:

  1. Equality Policy that allows guaranteeing the right to gender equality.
  2. Safe space to deal with alleged cases of sexual harassment and harassment.
  3. Life and Work in Balance in order to reconcile work and personal life with co-responsibility.
  4. Race without Obstacles will promote talent without prejudice and stereotypes.
  5. Equality Agents to promote gender equality within their sphere of influence.

Companies and work centers established in Jalisco, of any economic branch or business that do not belong to the government sector, may participate, regardless of whether or not they are part of the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce.

To facilitate the implementation of the project, some differentiated requirements are requested for small companies (from 11 to 30 workers) and medium and large companies (from 31 workers onwards.)

In addition, this project offers support and personalized advice in the implementation of the actions, awareness workshops, and a toolkit with all the general and specific information so that the work centers progressively build the work structures that allow women and men to develop in fair and equal spaces.
