Jalisco Leads the Country in Remittances from U.S.

The state of Jalisco received the largest amount of remittances registering revenues of 1.323 billion dollars in the second quarter, representing 10.17% of the national total.

The amount of money sent to the state during April, May, and June represents a growth of 26.8% compared to what was received from remittances in the same months of last year.

The state of Michoacán is in second place with 9.77% of the total, and Guanajuato in third with 8.42%. In contrast, the states that received the least remittances are Tlaxcala with 0.60%, Campeche with 0.29%, and Baja California Sur with 0.26% of the national total.

The head of the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco), Ernesto Sánchez Proal, recalled that Sedeco and the Jalisco Business Development Fund (Fojal) have financing available to facilitate the productive investment of remittances, so that this money becomes local businesses where Jalisco migrants in the United States and their relatives or friends who reside in Jalisco live and participate in society. He also pointed out that this increase in remittances, together with the programs of the Jalisco Plan for Economic Reactivation, will accelerate the recovery of the entity's economy.

“In Jalisco we are using remittances to convert them into productive investment through the program of Fojal, Jalisco Productive Migrant. That is, these remittances will not only become short-term economic spillovers, but through this program we will be converting them, part of this money, into investment that will also generate more economic income in the medium term. We not only want to depend on what our compatriots in the United States send us, but to take advantage of that to promote medium and long-term economic development, ”shared the head of Sedeco.

Guadalajara is the municipality where the largest share of remittances is registered, with 160 million dollars or 12.06% of the total for the state, followed by Zapopan with 107 million dollars or 8.05%. 110 of the 125 municipalities of Jalisco registered increases in remittances compared to the same quarter of 2020.
