Landslide Causes Collapse of Highway 80; Closed in Both Directions

Federal Highway 80 between Guadalajara and Barra de Navidad suffered a collapse Friday afternoon near the town of La Huerta, closing the road in both directions.

The State Government through the Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit, the Infrastructure and Public Works Secretariat (SIOP,) the Secretariat of Security, and municipal elements attended the collapse caused by a landslide along federal highway 80 at kilometer 243.5.

A specialized team of Civil Protection and Firefighters of the State and Regional Unit of Cihuatlán, a cell of the Group of Search and Rescue in collapsed structures (BREC,) and the K9 unit are in work at the place.

There was a preliminary report of three people possibly deceased in a collapsed trailer, which firefighters have since been confirmed as not true. However, a man was found to have lost his life in the rubble, and a specialized Civil Protection team continues to  work on the supervision of the disaster area.

In order to safeguard the integrity of each and every Jaliscan, the highway is closed in both directions.

An alternate route was opened for motorists to circulate from Cihuatlán to La Huerta entering at km. 70 + 000 of the section T Melaque-Puerto Vallarta towards Villa Purificación; and leaving at km. 193 + 000 of the section T Acatlan-Barra de Navidad. In the direction of the Huerta to Cihuatlán it is this route in reverse.

It is important to inform that specialized elements in Search and Rescue of the USAR group are already carrying out the first search tasks for missing persons, and evaluating the security conditions of the dismantling of rubble. Officers of the K9  unit of the Central Command also went ready to intervene in the search.

The authorities have placed preventive signage in addition to mobilizing specialized machinery such as a D7 tractor, 2 backhoes and 2 excavators working in place to start with the removal of material.

The works will continue as the fall of the material stabilizes, this in order to avoid risks to the personnel who are working in the place.

From the Government of Jalisco; We will continue working in a coordinated way to clear the way and give prompt attention to the injured people.

We extend a call to the general population to stay informed through official channels and not to fall into misinformation, and in case of emergency dial 911.
