Guadalajara Paints the City Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and government agencies of Jalisco along with Jalisco Solidario Volunteering join Cruz Rosa to "Paint the City Pink."

The efforts are to raise awareness and promote the culture of prevention and timely detection of this disease, and will be with the collaboration of the artist Álvaro Cuevas.

The coordinator of the Jalisco Solidario Volunteering, Joanna Santillán Álvarez, acknowledged at a press conference that this is a disease that not only affects those who suffer from it, but also the whole family, so it is important for the state government to participate in raising awareness of society in women's health care.

"It is a moral responsibility, but we must also see it as a gratitude for those of us who have health, and empathize for all these people who live a process as hard as cancer," she said.

The president of Cruz Rosa A.C., Aldara Alonso, explained that this action is part of the campaigns carried out in October, to raise awareness and give strength to the international fight against breast cancer.

"Cruz Rosa is a non-profit association made up mainly of women who support women who are going through this difficult process, since once they receive the diagnosis they experience fear, anguish, and uncertainty. The organization supports them in the accompaniment to overcome the disease; during their treatment by offering them accommodation and food as well as different supports for their rehabilitation, hence the importance of working on raising awareness in society.”

The philosophical artist and activist, Álvaro Cuevas, highlighted that this initiative is so that prominent artists will share their talent, by painting 16 sculptures in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, expressing from their perspective their awareness of this issue, through the Museum of Essential Philosophy (MUFE.) The presidents of the Municipal DIF Systems of Guadalajara and Zapopan, Maye Villa de Lemus and Michelle Greicha Frangie, respectively, along with the coordinator of the Jalisco Solidario Volunteer, will also participate by giving color to the sculptures.

"Where communication, expression, and actions can lead to these events. Today is to share through the MUFE sculptures that are blank canvases where artists can raise awareness and be communicating," highlighted the artist Álvaro Cuevas.

To support the actions of the civil organization Cruz Rosa, the Secretariat of the Social Assistance System, through the Support Program in its contingent modality for the acquisition of cancer medicine, has allocated about 3.4 million pesos during the years 2020 and 2021, to strengthen its work. In 8 years it has cared for 1,271 women with different types of cancer, 62% of its them being treated for breast cancer. For more information or to make a donation, you can visit their website:
