CONAFOR Celebrates Arbor Day with Reforestation Activities

Reforestation is an integral part of the forest restoration process.

In the framework of the celebration of Arbor Day and Forest Month, the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR,) through its 32 Forestry Development Promoters, carried out a symbolic reforestation throughout the country. Since 1959, by Presidential decree, July is the Month of the Forest, and the second Thursday of the month is National Arbor Day.

Around 1,700 people, including staff from the institution, staff from municipal and state government agencies, as well as civil society organizations, joined the reforestation activities. 41 municipalities participated, and approximately 33 hectares were reforested with native species from each region. These activities have the purpose of promoting forest and environmental culture among citizens.

Currently, the reforestation works are part of the forest restoration intervention strategy that CONAFOR guides, promoting that the actions are comprehensive and the conditions are fostered to reverse the degradation processes of the areas where the projects have an impact.

For 2021, CONAFOR has assigned 62.4 million pesos for 62 projects that translate into an area of 2,764 hectares to carry out forest restoration actions.

The objective of this component is to support the legitimate owners and possessors of forest lands to carry out comprehensive forest restoration projects in micro-watersheds and strategic regions of the country with a focus on Integrated Land Management, through practices that contribute to recovering the productivity of degraded forest ecosystems. This also to generate employment and improve the well-being of ejidos, communities, indigenous peoples, and smallholders, thus contributing with actions to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change.

CONAFOR invites citizens to join this celebration by carrying out reforestation activities in their own communities, and by taking precautions and care of forest ecosystems.
