ADAPTUR Program Promotes Environmental Consciousness in Tourism

The Ministry of the Environment and Territorial Development (SEMADET,) participated this Wednesday in the Second National Meeting ADAPTUR.

The intention of the meeting was to share the actions that have been carried out in each of the pilot sites of the Adaptation to Climate Change project based on Ecosystems with the Tourism Sector (ADAPTUR,) and the relevance of inter-institutional cooperation.

This cooperative project between Mexico and Germany is an initiative for joint work with the tourism sector in adaptation actions based on ecosystems as a measure to guarantee the development of tourism in the future. It is implemented by the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas, and the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, and is part of the International Climate Change Initiative.

To strengthen environmental actions, the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Climate Change Plan was carried out, and the Bay of Banderas Nayarit plan has been promoted and supported. In addition, various studies have been carried out that consider the inclusion of environmental criteria in decisions about investments in tourism infrastructure, as well as the economic risk of climate change.

SEMADET has advised the municipality of Puerto Vallarta for the preparation of the route for the conservation of the area known as Boca de Tomates, and proposals for Voluntary Areas Destined for Conservation have been made with the private sector.

For the government of Jalisco, inter-institutional cooperation in the implementation of projects is of utmost importance, since through collaborative schemes actions are strengthened and there is greater scope with the various sectors involved. In this case, the Mountain-Bahia Alliance has also joined and agreements have been reached with the Puerto Vallarta and Bay de Banderas Business Association.

The ADAPTUR project focuses on supporting the tourism sector to adapt to climate change, reduce risks to the business of tourism companies, and to protect natural assets such as beaches, reefs, jungles, biodiversity, and the services provided by ecosystems such as supply of water and other natural resources, among others. The project is also implemented in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and the Riviera Maya.
