State Biodiversity Committee Installed to Promote Actions in Jalisco

In order to monitor and coordinate the execution of the actions established in the State Biodiversity Strategy of Jalisco, the State Biodiversity Committee was installed this Friday.

The Secretariat for the Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet) led the meeting with governmental and non-governmental representatives from multisectoral state platforms and with experts on biodiversity issues. This committee will have the function of analyzing, advising, evaluating, and issuing opinions on the matter of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the state; as well as facilitating the coordination and follow-up for the execution of the actions established in the EEB-Jal. 

During the session, the progress of the implementation of this Strategy was presented, which so far has 12 actions carried out, 61 actions in process, and 27 actions planned, in total there are 100 actions designed for its implementation in the short, medium, and long term. 

The EEB-Jal is a planning instrument that seeks to promote changes in the approach to the use and conservation of biodiversity in Jalisco. It was published on June 1 in the Official Newspaper "El Estado de Jalisco," and was presented on March 18. Furthermore, on this same date, a Framework Collaboration Agreement was signed with the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO.)

The CEB is made up of representatives from different sectors, on behalf of the government:  SEMADET, the Indigenous State Commission, the Ministry of Economic Development (SEDECO,) the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER,) the Ministry of Public Finance, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources Federal Delegation in Jalisco, CONABIO, and the University of Guadalajara. 

The non-governmental representation of state multisectoral platforms includes the State Committee for the Environmental Protection of Wetlands of Jalisco, the REDD+ Advisory Technical Committee, and the Advisory Council of Protected Natural Areas of the State of Jalisco. 

Representing people with experience in biodiversity issues were Dr. Ana Luisa Santiago Pérez, expert in the generation and application of knowledge; the Mtro. José Santiago Machado Macías, expert in conservation, restoration and management of the territory; Dr. Jesús Juan Rosales Adame, expert in the integration of biodiversity in productive sectors; Dr. Elba Aurora Castro Rosales, expert in environmental education and culture; and Lic. Gisela Hernández Ángeles, expert in governance, legal framework, and the administration of justice.
