Introducing the War Against Litter, Part 1

Introducing the War Against Litter, Part 1

John Benus, Creator & Director of this badly needed campaign, is an American who loves Mexico.

He and his volunteers, completed a successful "Guerra Contra La Basura" or War Against Litter/Trash campaign in Talpa de Allende, and was asked by the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Office to continue doing it here in Vallarta. That's exactly what he's doing now.

His passion to help create a cleaner, healthier environment began more than 20 years ago when he was the team leader of the Adopt a Highway program in Marin County, California.

Throughout history, individuals such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Emiliano Zapata, Mother Teresa , Gandhi, Jacques Cousteau & Jane Goodall all had a dream and mission to help people or the environment.

His goal and mission, with your help, is to create a cleaner & healthier Puerto Vallarta for all residents, visitors & future generations.

With your support as a volunteer or donor you can contribute to this mission to win "La Guerra Contra La Basura" in Puerto Vallarta and throughout Mexico.

The theme of the campaign is “Keep Vallarta Beautiful.”

John’s philosophy on this War Against Trash; “It’s the responsibility of everyone to maintain a clean and healthy environment, no matter where you live or what country you’re from. If we don’t take care of the planet now, there will be more flooding, droughts, hurricanes, cyclones, viruses, and eventually all species including humans will become extinct.”

The Origin of Litter

It was customary for our great-grandparents to throw items that were broken or no longer needed into the woods, river or their backyards. These discarded items were made of wood and clay that were easily biodegradable. So, the custom of throwing things anywhere has been observed and copied until today. Now, however, most objects and materials—that didn’t exist back then, such as plastic containers, aluminum cans, and fast-food wrappers—, not only pollute our environment physically, but also visually for hundreds of thousands of years.
