Ministry of Culture Seeks Authors and Artists for Book Publishing Grants

The Jalisco Ministry of Culture of has launched calls to grant the publication of two types of books.

The first one is "Hemingway's Suitcase," aimed at new writers in the state for the publication of first works. While the second, "Impress you," calls for publishers, printers, and artists in general, to print illustrated books on photography, art, illustration, and architecture.

David Izazaga, head of the SC Publications Headquarters, points out that "the issue of a first work is fundamental, serving (authors and artists of) this sector that have a book out there, and that unfortunately do not have an easy way in the publishing world." For this reason, "Hemingway's Suitcase" is a call specifically addressed to these authors, who have not been adequately attended to from several administrations ago.

He also points out that the call is totally inclusive; the only lock is precisely not having previous publications. “It can be someone very young or it can be an older adult, it is open to any type of community and very open in terms of genres, that is, any genre short story, novel, essay, chronicle, testimony, autobiography, any sub genre that has to do with narrative; as well as poetry and dramaturgy,” points out Izazaga.

Through the call, which will be in force until September 5, up to 11 titles will be published with a circulation of 1,000 copies for each book. Proposals made by people from Jalisco, or residing in Jalisco with three years residency, may participate, and must present an unpublished manuscript, originally written in Spanish, with a minimum of 40 and a maximum of 120 pages.

"Hemingway's Suitcase" takes its name from a well-known anecdote in the literary world, regarding the loss of the first manuscripts of the writer, which were in a suitcase that was stolen from his wife, while he went to the publishing house that finally was going to publish them. On the contrary, the call seeks that the first works of the participants are published and not run with the same fate as the manuscripts of the American author.

On the other hand, "Impress you" is a call for the printing of illustrated books on photography, art, illustration, and architecture, aimed at editors or authors. They must send a proposal that provides information on the subject, the development of a serious investigation that includes a rich and relevant iconography, and that complies with the technical characteristics that are stipulated in the call.

The application must be submitted with a layout proposal with a final size of maximum 25 (twenty-five) x 25 (twenty-five) centimeters, images with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi in JPG format; in a file in PDF format.

The head of the Publications Headquarters points out that "art books are very expensive, they tend to be very expensive to produce. We are offering grants… for the printing of these books. The call seeks that (the artist) share with us the model of their projects. Surely there will be authors working on such books; photographers, designers, publishers, or even printers, who are in process, or in search of support for the printing of these types of books.”

In attention to the sanitary measures of general observance for the mitigation and containment of the COVID-19 virus, those who have the interest to participate and meet the eligibility criteria and the participation requirements, must send their proposal and the COMPLETE documentation to the email: This email address is being protected from spambots. The call will be valid until September 5. For more information, it is necessary to contact the Publications Office 33 3030 4500, extension 54726.
