Jalisco Culture Celebrates Diversity and Inclusion with Literature, Visual Arts, Cinema and Talks

On June 28, the International LGBTQ + Pride Day is celebrated in Mexico and in other parts of the world. For this reason, the Ministry of Culture of Jalisco (SC) has prepared a program to commemorate

that date during the months of May and June, with a series of activities that include film screenings, exhibitions, literary presentations, talks and a performance. 

These actions are intended to defend, support, and renew, the commitment towards cultural diversity, tolerance, and pluralism; and to continue with the work carried out under the Culture with Approach axis of the SC. 

The program, which will take place in the Ex Convento del Carmen, begins on May 27, at 7:00 p.m., with activities by MEG Jalisco. The inauguration of the exhibitions will begin with “Siete,” a photographic exhibition by Ricardo Ramos, and the inauguration of the collective exhibition “Paraíso.” 

Then at 9:00 pm “Puto Paraíso” will be screened, with the presence of its director, Alejandro Serratos, and part of the talent that appears in the stories about the LGBTIQ + community in Guadalajara, which make up the documentary. In addition, on Saturday May 29 at 1:00 pm, Alejandro Serratos will offer a guided tour of the exhibitions "Siete" and "Paraíso."

The Directorate of Cultural and Creative Industries of the SC, as part of its Creative Economy Program, has organized the panel "Reflections on Safe Spaces for the LGBTQ + Community," which will take place on Thursday, June 8, at 6:00 p.m. This will be coordinated by ¡Arrrde !, a creative house that develops, manages, and produces LGBTTTIQA + cultural and artistic content with a gender perspective. 

On Thursday, June 10 at 6:00 p.m., Andrés Treviño will present the conversation "Guadalajara: Where Men are Found," a reflection on the identity of Guadalajara in the face of the stereotype of the charro. 

"The Deviant Revolutions" is the name of the performance that the group "Pink Friday" will offer on Thursday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m., with which it proposes a reflection on the struggle for rights and the visibility of the LGBTQ + communities. 

Finally, on Thursday, June 24, at 7:00 p.m., the discussion will be held "Building Community Through Drag," with the participation of Isabel Villalobos and the Dragot Collective, whose main objective is to show said practice as a creative expression of the new contemporary generations. 

Literature 

The program El Guardagujas, organized by the SC Language and Literature Headquarters, will dedicate Tuesdays in June to literary productions related to the LGBTQ + community, with the presentation of 5 titles from different publishers, which will take place each Tuesday in June at 6:30 p.m. in the State Central Library “Prof. Ramón García Ruíz.” 

The books that will be presented are the "Drag Yearbook 2020," by Hechizo GDL, by the author Eduardo García; "The Imaginary Companion of Marek Kotsky," an atypical editorial, by Mario Heredia; "If it Was Happiness or Pain," compiled by Luis Martín Ulloa; "In the Heart of Fire," by Francisco Javier Pinzón; and "Enola Gay" by Luis Armenta Malpica. 

Pride Drops 

Finally "Gotas de Orgullo" is a series of activities to raise awareness through art and seek a culture of inclusion and non-discrimination, organized by MEG Jalisco, the González Gallo Cultural Center, The Lake Chapala Society AC, the Government of Jocotepec, and the Robsmx cultural producer, in alliance with civil society organizations.

A traveling exhibition of the international collection of posters "Amor +" will be created, in which 21 designers from Mexico, Venezuela, and Ecuador participate, who through design create visual messages around diverse and inclusive love, which will be exhibited for three weekends at the González Gallo Cultural Center, from June 10 to 13; The Lake Chapala Society AC, from June 18 to 20, and at the Jocotepec “José Vaca Flores” House of Culture, from June 23 to 30. 

In addition, the talk "How to Generate More Inclusive Environments and Support Social Groups" will be held on June 20, at 10:30 am, at The Lake Chapala Society AC. And finally, in this same space, the documentary “Cónyuges” will be screened on Friday, June 18, at 8:30 p.m., and on Friday, June 25, at 8:00 p.m., at the “José Vaca Flores” House of Culture of Jocotepec.
