Jalisco Celebrates Gay Pride and Endorses Commitment to Equality

The Government of Jalisco celebrates that diversity is an important part of our identity, and that our history could not be read without recognizing all those moments in which brave people became visible to show that as a society we can be more equal.

Jalisco recognizes the historical debt towards people of sexual and gender diversity, and will continue to work in favor of the community.

Since the creation of the Sexual Diversity Directorate of the Human Rights Undersecretariat at the end of 2019, affirmative actions have been designed and implemented, such as the recognition of the right to self-perceived gender identity of childhood, adolescence, and transgender people, which made us the first and so far the only entity in our country with this measure.

Reforms of the regulations establishing the administrative procedure through which trans people can adapt their identity documents has high Human Rights standards, thanks to collaborations with international organizations such as the Universalization Program of Civil Identity in the Americas of the Organization of American States.

At the same time, an operational manual has been implemented for the Civil Registry offices of the 125 municipalities of Jalisco, this in order to guarantee the application of this right without discrimination.

In addition to this, a route of attention to hateful attacks against LGBTIQ + people has been designed and implemented, and the mainstreaming of a human rights approach is promoted through the different dependencies of the government of Jalisco and its municipalities.

On March 11, the announcement of the "Institutional Strengthening Program for the care of Victims of Discrimination" was published in the Official Newspaper of the State of Jalisco, in an effort to generate an institutional model of attention to behaviors discriminatory, including complaint processes for discrimination and homophobia within the workplace. Discriminatory actions will be channeled to the authority with the power to investigate, resolve, and punish, so that we face the problems of exclusion and limitation of access to the rights in full of LGBTIQ + people.

Throughout June, in the cultural centers of the State of Jalisco and through the Jalisco Radio and Television System, content to sensitize and educate people about diversity and to celebrate pride has been broadcasted, this to encourage a process of cultural change that further transforms Jalisco into an inclusive state.

However, it is also recognized that these efforts, by themselves, are not enough. In the construction of a Jalisco of Equals, participation of all actors in society is needed.

For this reason, as we come to the conclusion of Gay Pride Month, we call on each and every one to find reasons for pride in our differences.
