Local Musician Victor Vega Loves to Teach Music to Kids

"It is very easy, living such a fast and changing life, as it is lived today, that lets us forget many of the things we have done and lived in these years.

And it is at the moment that someone asks us to make a summary of our history as Musician and Teacher, when we realize that it is a bigger story than we always thought."

These are the words of Victor Vega, Musician and Music Teacher for over 35 years. Victor was born in Mexico City and moved to the sunny shores of Puerto Vallarta in 1998, where he has dedicated all this time to musical work and teaching. He offers private music lessons, and has also given lectures and workshops at DIF Puerto Vallarta, Sound Rana Music Store, Santa Esperanza Children's Shelter, Girl's Heart, and UNIVA Vallarta.

Victor developed an interest in music very young, around 4 years old, and found that it came natural to him, and that it was the best way to express himself. At 6 years old he was given the school assignment of bringing an instrument made at home, and his father fashioned a guitar from an old tennis racket. He immediately fell in love, and began experimenting with playing. Victor’s parents had always loved music, and soon his sister and brothers began showing musical interests as well.

Then when he was 8 years old his father had come home with an acoustic guitar, and announced that it was meant for whoever learned to play it first. So of course, Victor decided that he had to be the one, and dedicated himself to learning. His parents had always told him and his siblings that they could achieve their dreams if they worked hard.

After learning guitar, Victor taught himself to play piano, bass, and drums, as well as developing his vocal talent. Inspired by and initially instructed by Victor, his sister and brothers also developed their musical talents. His sister could sing beautifully, and his brothers learned to play many instruments.

Victor remembers one day while sitting in their room he turned to his brothers and said “In the future we will play in a band together, and the name of the band shall be Los Unos Band.” That was 40 years ago, and they are still playing together today!

Victor continued his learning attending workshops, seminars, a university, and a music school in Mexico City, refining his skills and talent.

In 2015 he was asked by one of his vocal students to assist in recording a song, and the young artist was so impressed that he asked Victor to help record the entire 12-song album. Victor did all the instrumentals, recorded on separate tracks, working 2 years on the project. They then toured together as the band Emarebil Nocturna promoting their album “Bajo el Mando de la Luna” throughout Mexico.

Music is a full-time job for Victor, playing in his band for local bars and restaurants and offering private music lessons. They play international music of all kinds, and are currently working at the Margarita Grill in the Romantic Zone, just a couple blocks from the Playa de los Muertos Beach. You can find him there every night from 4:00pm to 9:00pm, and he recommends it as a good place to eat. He has also worked at the Vallarta Convention Center, Marriot Casa Magna, Le Kliff Restaurant, Riu Hotels, Hotel Los Arcos, Princess Cruises, and Route 66.

Once while performing, a customer commented that he loved the way Victor played and asked if he could buy Victor’s guitar. Then the man’s friend chimed in to say “Don’t just give it to him, he is a millionaire and he can pay a lot for it because he loves the way you play, and he is the guitar player for Coldplay.”

Victor is also a lover of theater, and has participated in shows at several of the main theaters of Vallarta, including Act II, The Palm, Boutique Theater, Stage and Forum, and Third call.

Victor most of all loves to teach music, because as he puts it, it is a good way to help people find a better life. He started teaching in 1993, and he helps people to learn what they want to play. He offers lessons in all the instruments that he plays; guitar, ukulele, piano, synthesizer, bass, drums, and voice. He also teaches how to read music, and with an enthusiastic student can teach the basics in just a few months.

He has also been an advisor and teacher of multiple local bands, among which are After the Nightfall, Astral Katastrophe, She-Wolf Jager, Snowy, Bieroscum, Dr. Mars, and Emarebil Nocturna.

If you would like to contact Victor regarding private lessons, the fee is 250 pesos per hour, and you can message him on Facebook to discuss your goals and make arrangements.
