The mayor of Jalisco cancelled the Day of the Dead celebrations months ago; so what do you do during this Mexican holiday?
It is a time that families remember their loved ones that have passed away. The official dates are November 1 and 2nd, 2021; the first date is to celebrate the children that have passed away, the second, is to remember the adults who have died.
Normally the Day of the Dead involves events, face painting, parades, live music, dancing ... This year, although the COVID numbers are dropping, there is little hope that the mayor of Jalisco will change his mind to allow festivals and the concentration of crowds.
Over the past year and a half, COVID precautions and restrictions have stolen some of our best holidays all around the world. Holidays that are meant for families to create new moments together; memories of celebrations, sharing meals, love and laughter.
This writer, a tourist and a man that loves the young spirit inside of me, I appreciate the face paintings the most. The effort, artistic skill and beauty that I have seen in previous years in Puerto Vallarta impresses me beyond words. Then there are the costumes, the dancers and their colorful dresses, it is my favorite celebration of the year.
The Day of the Dead is the celebration of zombies, witches, ghouls and goblins. A time when you can be anything or anyone. Superheroes, vampires, princesses and pirates are some of the most popular choices. El Dia de los Muertos is a tradition, a time to embrace the souls that are connected to our lives. These souls want to be remembered.
