Get a Big, Flavorful Seafood Dish or a Delicious Burrito at Mariscos Las Piedras

When you think of seafood in Mexico, you probably think of a nice, shaded restaurant on the beach, but that’s not always the case. There are tons of marisco, or seafood, restaurants and a lot of them are not on, or near, the beach.

For example, today my parents and I ate at a seafood place in Ramblases! It’s called Mariscos Las Piedras, and it is located near the top of Avenida Puerto Las Peñas, across the street from Abarotes Joya. Once again, their business isn't marked as a location on a map, so you can't find it by name, but the longitude latitude location is 20.62944750131939, -105.20680290829267. Though, if you don't want to come all the way up here for some seafood they do deliver.

Mariscos Las Piedras serves a variety of tostadas, such as ceviche and octopus, and they also prepare seafood salad, aquachiles, and campechana, which is a seafood cocktail. I got two ceviche tostadas, and there was a huge mountain of ceviche on each one, and they were really good! But, they are also quite cheap!! I, personally, like my ceviche with a lot of lime, so I had to add some, but I think that for most people it would be perfect. They cost 25 pesos each, which is about $1.25 USD, and at least for me, two of these mountainous tostadas were quite filling.

My dad got the campechana, which he couldn’t even finish! It was very big and filling, for 85 pesos, or a little over 4 dollars. It had shrimp, octopus, oysters and limpets, or what they call gorros. They call them that because they look like little hats. They had a very strong shellfish flavor that was kind of between lobster and scallops, and a super smooth texture like a perfectly cooked scallop. Though, I personally don’t enjoy shellfish very much, so I didn’t like the gorros, but my mom and dad really liked them!

My mom got a big seafood salad, with avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and a huge pile of shrimp bathed in a worcestershire marinade. The shrimp itself was exquisite; it had a wonderful fresh seafood flavor that was neither fishy nor bland. Kudos to Gilberto for only using the best and freshest shrimp!! And bear in mind that premium shrimp can be quite expensive, especially in the larger sizes, these were probably 21-25 count per pound. So for 160 pesos, or about 8 dollars, it’s a great plate of food for a great price!!

The restaurant itself is kind of small, but it’s a nice place. There are lots of pretty flowers, and many pots with other plants and herbs, which the cook, Gilberto, uses in his dishes. There are also an awning, umbrellas, and a tree near all the tables, so the dining area is well shaded and protected from rain.

At the end of the row of tables there is a small kitchen area, where Hilberto or one of the ladies make drinks for the customers, plate the food, or just hang out between customers. Also, everyday the seafood and ceviche is freshly cooked and prepared; they never serve food that was not made the same day. Anything they don’t sell becomes their own dinner, or sometimes when there are only a couple people left just before closing, Hilberto will give out a couple tostadas or whatever he has left that day.

Though this restaurant is far away from the beach and tourist zone, it’s still a really nice place, and for cheap, so I totally recommend you come visit it.

And if you know of a great little place for a good meal at a low price, or even own one, let us know!

Now, I know this article is quite old, and one of my first ones, but this is one of my dad's favorite places to go for drinks, and not only that but also for food. Recently Hilberto started making burritos, so we had to come and review them!! They're big, juicy, and super low-cost! And when I say low-cost I mean it, because they're only 80 pesos, 4 dollars! Other shrimp burritos of the same size I've seen for up to 200 pesos! The vegetables are cooked separately from the shrimp, so nothing is over or under cooked. The lettuce is a little wilted, which may not sound super appetizing, but it goes really good with the melty cheese and delicious  shrimp, that is not only cooked good but also has great flavor on it's own. Also, the whole inside of the burrito is covered in a delicious sweet sauce, which I've never tasted anything like, and especially not on a burrito.

My dad got the same thing, a shrimp burrito, just because they're so good. Normally we would get different things, but boy are these burritos good! They have lots and lots of melty gooey cheese, so it seems more like a shrimp quesadilla than a burrito!! Though, it has equal amounts of delicious, big, tender shrimp cooked to perfection. And my dad adores the sweet sauce, and agrees that it's very different and unique, of course in a good way. Also, my dad added chile oil to his, so with the sweetness of the sauce and the spicy and dryness of the oil it tasted almost thai!!
