Come Get A Variety Of Sweet, Spicy, And Savory Ribs At El Ataskon

Today we went to El Ataskon in Ramblases.

Hello, again. My dad and I, and sometimes my mom comes along too, have been going out on the town to find some of the best hole in the wall, off the beaten path cheap eats restaurants that we can find. We go out almost every day, finding some new little place to tell you about and review the food and prices.

Today my dad and I decided we were going to go get some Tacos Al Pastor at a little place that has 20 tacos for 100 pesos, but we had a change of plans. As we were driving down towards the taco place my dad saw a new little restaurant with a sign reading “Mango Habanero.”  My dad always likes mango habanero, and my mom loves it, so he quickly made a U-turn to see what the restaurant served. They are called El Ataskon, and are located on Puerto Veracruz, a block from the OXXO on the corner of Puerto Tampico and Veracruz. The latitude longitude location is 20.630158798901395, -105.21079284643207, but if you don't want to come down here then they do deliveries.

We sat down and a friendly waitress gave us a menu right away, and there were also many posters all over the walls describing the different foods they have to offer. They serve ribs, piernitas, fries, hot dogs, and hamburgers. The hamburgers are very unique, and I can’t wait to try one. I thought their Pizza Burger sounded very interesting, which has melted cheese and pepperoni on top, and they also do the same thing with a hot dog, which is called the Pizza Dog. Piernitas are chicken drumsticks cooked like chicken wings. The owner, Skarlet Barradas, said she doesn’t like to use wings because they barely have any meat on them. Handmade cheesecake is also on their menu, which my mom and I both love, but they were out today.

We decided on a kilo of ribs, and it was hard to choose between the seven sauce flavors, but we ended up choosing four to sample; mango habanero, spicy blackberry, beer bacon, and chimichurri.

Traditional sweet and spicy barbecue ribs are very yummy, but these varieties of sauce flavors from El Ataskon are an interesting twist; and in my opinion, much better than plain barbecue.

The mango habanero is very sweet and fruity yet it had slight spiciness. The spicy blackberry had a subtle berry flavor, hinting towards the taste of red wine, and again was delightfully sweet and spicy. I am not exactly a fan of beer, but the bacon beer was surprisingly very good! The bacon flavor was pretty noticeable, and the beer wasn’t, which I loved. Lastly, the chimichurri was not like I expected, since I’m used to the green chimichurri. It was very creamy, rich, and full of flavor, like a cross between gravy and an herby pasta sauce.

The ribs themselves, plain without sauce, were tasty and tender. Skarlet cooks them first in an oven, and then she puts them on a carbon grill, which gives them a nice barbecue flavor without being smoky.

This little restaurant has a small seating area inside, and some tables outside as well. Everything was nice and clean, and the people that worked there were kind and friendly. My Dad started to talking to one of them, and as it turns out he knows my mom’s brother, and lived for 30 years very near where we used to live up in California. What a small world!
