Today we went to get some yummy comida corrida at Loncheria Juanita but found out that they do more than that.
Hello, again. My dad and I, and sometimes my mom comes along too, have been going out on the town to find some of the best hole in the wall, off the beaten path cheap eats restaurants that we can find. We go out almost every day, finding some new little place to tell you about and review the food and prices.
When I was younger, about 5 or 6 years old, I used to go to Ameyali School, and the ladies at Loncheria Juanita used to serve lunch every day across the street at Ameyali. Every day I would order one or two plain bean tacos. It was just refried beans on a tortilla, yet I really loved it. However once I started getting homeschooled, I didn’t see them anymore.
Then a few years ago I went into the restaurant, and somehow they recognized me! And, thinking back to what I looked like when I was 5, and when I was 10, I looked nothing alike. They probably just recognized my dad, who always looks and dresses the same.
But, anyways, I’ve started going back to this place recently, and today we decided to go there for lunch and write an article about it. It’s called Loncheria Juanita, and is located on Calle Pavo Real right across from Ameyali School. The longitude latitude location is 20.639256179858137, -105.21287110600674.
The place serves tortas and comida corrida of the day. Today they had picadillo, which is ground beef in a sauce with potatoes, and milanesa, which is breaded chicken. Also, each dish comes with beans, rice, and/or pasta. The picadillo cost 65 pesos and the milanesa cost 70 pesos. The waters of the day cost 10 for a small, 15 for half a liter, and 25 for a liter. You can also get a meal plus a 500 ml soda for only 80 pesos, that’s a complete and filling lunch for $4 USD.
I got the picadillo with pasta, which was super good. It had a sauce that was, once again, not spicy but spice-y. It had lots of flavor to it, and I think the sauce was tomato based. The pasta was really creamy and rich, and was served cool rather than hot, which I don’t know if that was on purpose, but I liked it. I also got a medium, or half liter, of jamaica water.
My dad got the milanesa with rice and beans, and a liter of horchata, which looked, tasted, and smelled really good. The milanesa was pounded out very thin, which made it super tender and soft, yet crunchy. It was so thin and crunchy it was almost like a potato chip, but with really good chicken flavor. The rice had carrots and poblano peppers, which aren’t spicy by the way, and that gave it great flavor. And the beans were also quite good.
The inside of the restaurant was not big or small, but it seemed to have a lot of room. There were two small tables and one long for seating, as well as a table where the waters of the day sit. The kitchen area is small but clean, and seems to be sufficient for keeping up with the restaurant. After all, they once served lunches across the street at Ameyali, and do have the experience of figuring out how to efficiently serve so many in a limited time.
As we were looking around while waiting for our lunch, we saw a poster promoting Nails M&F, a nail company, so we asked about it. Apparently Juanita’s daughter does nails. She does them at the back of where the restaurant is located, but you need an appointment first. She can apply and paint basic acrylic nails for only 100 pesos, which is incredibly cheap, though the price can go up for designs, and varies depending on how difficult the design is. Or you can get your natural nails or toenails painted for only 80 pesos.
As we continued talking we learned that Juanita’s son does tacos, quesadillas, arrieros, and volcanes at night. Mmmm, we’ll have to try that one of these evenings. And all of this at the same location!
