A Nice Low Cost Treat From Guadalajara

A Nice Low Cost Treat From Guadalajara

Today we went to Las Ahogadas for some delicious tortas with my friends.

Hello, again. My dad and I, and sometimes my mom comes along too, have been going out on the town to find some of the best not so popular cheap eats, mostly family-owned, restaurants that we can find. We go out almost every day, finding some new little place, or big place, to tell you about and review the food and prices.

A couple of days ago my dad and I saw a post on Facebook by a restaurant owner saying that the homeless woman who always carries a bunch of clothes and blankets will come in and buy 3 tacos everyday, and of course they treat her with respect and as a human, while other restaurants won’t even let her inside their place. So, we decided to check out the place, and their food, and the guy himself! And I also brought two friends with me. The place is called Las Ahogadas and is located on Calle Politecnico Nacional #139 in Colonia Educacion and their latitude longitude location is 20.660291618018064, -105.23888002402684 but they aren’t marked on Google Maps. Instead, the place is marked as what it used to be, which is SoloSolar.

Las Ahogadas serves tortas ahogadas, but they also sell tacos. As for tortas they have carnitas, buche, tongue, and assorted. For tacos they have potato, beans, carnitas, assorted, tongue, and buche. I’m not sure what the assorted was, and I forgot to ask, but my friend ordered it and it did seem to have some organ meat in it. The tortas weren’t huge, but they’re a pretty good price and the tacos are pretty cheap, too. The prices for tortas range from 50-60 and for tacos 10-22. Also, Las Ahogadas have fresh waters everyday plus sodas.

I got a tongue torta ahogada with a liter of jamaica water. The bread on the torta was super good and salty, and very obviously sourdough. It was also super hard, and even after I brought it home and it had been sitting in sauce for a couple hours it kept it’s shape and wasn’t super soggy. But this is on purpose for torta ahogadas, which are meant to be dipped, and they intentionally dry out the bread in a series of oven-heated steps. The meat on my tortas was really tender and in pretty small pieces, so when I bit into the torta chunks of meat didn’t fall out like on other sandwiches. Also, the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and overall everything was delicious on the torta.

On this occasion I brought two friends with me, Dani and Sara. Dani got three carnitas tacos and Sara got two assorted tacos. Dani said the meat was really good, well seasoned, and crunchy yet not super hard. Sara said that the meats were all well seasoned and well cooked. Though, she did pick out what she thought was liver out of her tacos. I’m not sure if that’s what it was though. My dad got a carnitas torta and 2-taco special. He said the bread was surprising, since he’d never had good salty bolillo made in Puerto Vallarta before. They never quite have that sour salty flavor, and they’re normally soft. The carnitas were pretty good; they weren’t the best he’s ever had but they were really good! And he said the tomato sauce was different from the typical torta ahogada sauce he was used to, it was creamier like tomato soup. Then he ended up adding so much hot sauce he could barely taste the flavors anyway. The two women working there looked at him like he was crazy!

Las Ahogadas is a pretty decent sized place, and it’s very clean. Outside they have a couple tables, which the homeless woman always sits at one of them, and then they have about half a dozen tables inside. And there is a stand outside where the bread is kept warm and dry, and also there are sauces outside if you’d like to add some to your torta or taco.
