Breastfeeding Increases Survival and Healthy Development of Newborns

SSJ, SSAS and DIF Jalisco united to promote through conferences the healthy practice of breastfeeding and the breast milk collection campaign.

Jalisco joins World Breastfeeding Week 2021, to promote and encourage this practice that provides great benefits for the development of girls and boys, and reduces infant mortality.

When a mother breastfeeds her child, an atmosphere is established in which she not only offers him food, but also sets in motion a series of mechanisms so that attachment is maintained and affective ties are reinforced. It is such an intimate contact, so special, that on a neurological level, stimulations are produced in the baby's brain.

The correct practice of breastfeeding is essential to increase the survival and healthy development of girls and boys. This is why one of the mechanisms to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, specifically the reduction of infant mortality and the improvement of maternal health.

During the inaugural event, the Coordinator of the Jalisco Solidario Volunteering, Joanna Santillán Álvarez highlighted that breast milk is the perfect unique and personalized formula for girls and boys. Of all the links that may exist between a mother and her baby at the time of birth, breastfeeding is undoubtedly one of the most significant and indispensable moments for both of them.

"Through breastfeeding in the first six months of life the maximum development of our girls and our boys is ensured. Breastfeeding is giving health and well-being for their future, so that their nutrition is complete." This determines their physical development, cognitive, and social, and generates a deep connection between mothers and their daughters and sons, Santillán Álvarez acknowledged.

He recognized that it is not only important to promote breastfeeding through information and promoting decent spaces for it to take place, but also to share this food, since sometimes due to different circumstances it is not possible for all mothers to generate milk for their babies. "There are those who have the conditions to do it and there are those who do not, that is why it is also important as women to share."

Álvarez stressed the importance of working as a society to dignify breastfeeding spaces, and that inclusive policies are created to ensure a dignified life from the moment of birth. "That is why the work we do… is essential and fundamental to create a comprehensive public policy that defends early childhood."

The Secretary of Health for the State of Jalisco, Fernando Petersen Arangure, taught that breastfeeding is the most important bet that can be made in favor of nutrition, food security, healthy development, and survival of a newborn. It is a natural practice that contributes to developing their potential to the fullest, and giving them an even starting floor in the first six months of life.

“In Jalisco we are convinced of the positive impact it has on childhood and therefore we are taking all the necessary actions to encourage it; through training for health personnel, promotion among the population and, above all, empowerment of mothers to protect their health and that of their daughters and sons, protecting their right to give and receive breast milk. Today we join more than 120 countries that commemorate a world week dedicated exclusively to Breastfeeding,” indicated the Secretary. He pointed out that in Jalisco, 60.5% of infants between 0 and 23 months of age are bottle-fed, and only 34.4% begin breastfeeding in the first hours.

“In our state, 92.8% of babies were ever breastfed, but only 23%, that is, two out of ten, received exclusive breastfeeding from 0 to 6 months. In Jalisco we want there to be many more. Today we have 31 breastfeeding-friendly spaces and lactation rooms, both in public and private institutions, including schools. And in the state we have seven civil society groups working in favor of breastfeeding.”

The Secretary called on us to be socially responsible with this practice in the community, in the family, in the universities, and even from the schools of basic and upper secondary education that all and everyone know of the benefits and support breastfeeding, strengthening this healthy practice. And he gave special thanks by appointing the Breastfeeding Ambassador 2021, Camila Fernández Guinart, who spoke about her experience as a first-time mother.

"Breastfeeding my baby is a gift from God that gives us women (a way) to offer the best to our babies. For this reason I totally recommend it, and the important thing is not to despair, to take things slowly so that the baby bonds to the breast mother and feeds properly, and therefore can enjoy excellent health," said the ambassador in Jalisco.
