SALME Announces Activities to Commemorate World Mental Health Day

Jalisco joins the commemoration of World Mental Health Day, on October 10, with various activities that were announced today by the Jalisco Institute of Mental Health (SALME.)

The director of SALME, Francisco Javier Ramírez Barreto, said that the state joins the motto of the World Health Organization (WHO) "Mental Health Care for Everyone: Let's Make it Happen," which seeks to promote prevention and timely care of mental disorders and sensitize society.

“It is to generate awareness about this issue, as well as to promote different efforts that promote it, that highlight the importance of a comprehensive vision in health, where mental health is an essential component of people's well-being… and how we each have to take care of ourselves and in the collective,” said the director of SALME.

The expert commented that the World Mental Health Day campaign offers opportunities, especially in these times of pandemic “for all of us to do something in favor of life: individually, to take concrete measures in favor of our own mental health and support friends and family who are affected by a disorder derived from the pandemic or of any other type.” He exemplified that employers can take steps to establish wellness programs for their employees, and in general make mental health care a reality for all.

The manager explained that SALME cares for around 45,000 people each year, and this 2021 there is a slight increase in consultations of 0.62% compared to last year. As of September 30, 30,330 consultations have been attended when at the same period of 2020 30,146 were attended.

In the Crisis Hotline Via Telephone 075, a decrease of 17% is detected since in 2020 15,209 calls had been received (April to September,) and in this same period of 2021 12,603 calls have been received.

“Inviting the population to participate with us, it is very important that together we achieve that this message provided by WHO and the Jalisco Health Secretariat to receive mental care for all, will only be possible through the very active participation of the civil society and the population in general,” he pointed out.
