Room For One More? Adopt a Pet for a Loyal Friend and Companion

Meet Esperanza, which means “Hope.” She is a spayed female of mixed breed, a little over one year old, who is hoping for a loving home. She has been in the shelter over 4 months along with her 6 siblings.

The Puerto Vallarta Animal Control Center (CCSA,) began its mission on June 14th, 2004 thanks to the initiative of the Zootechnician Veterinarian Doctors Association and to the decision of then Mayor, Lic. Gustavo González. Its main function is to collect stray dogs wandering the streets of Puerto Vallarta and to promote in the local population a different culture of caring for pets, taking advantage of the contribution in this regard of foreign residents and tourists.

Their mission is to solve the problems associated with pets, promote the culture of care and protection of animals, promote respect and fair treatment of animals, inspire the responsibility of pet owners, and prevent and control the risks that pets could pose to the health of their owners, other pets in the household, and the general population.

CCSA has been a no-kill center for several years now. Occasionally animals are sacrificed via painless lethal injection, when they are in irreversible pain or have severe injuries that will leave them with an undesirable quality of life.

Unfortunately, if you take a look at the list of animals you would notice that some, especially dogs, have been living for quite some time at the center. These animals really need loving homes with caring families. If you have the space in your home and heart to adopt a pet, please check out the list of available pets for adoption.

Some animals are vulnerable and required special care before they are ready for final adoption. If you are not ready to adopt but could become a temporary home to a cat or a dog, please let us know to match you with an animal of your choice.

At the CCSA there's always a need for donations of all types; medicines, food, supplies, time, etc. Your help would be more efficient knowing the specific needs of the moment, you can call them at (322) 293-3690 (Spanish).

This is Sparrow, a short-haired neutered male about 2 ½ years old, and he has lived in the shelter since he was a kitten, along with his sister, Morgana.

This is Suegra, a spayed female about 6 1/2 years old. She is very social and has been waiting for adoption for a little over 3 months.

And this is Sheila, a spayed female of mixed breed, very social, who has been waiting for a home for over 100 days.

Currently the CCSA has 49 dogs and 47 cats for adoption. For a complete list with pictures, or for more information on how you can help, please visit their site:

It's very easy to adopt an animal from the center. You need to bring a copy of your id, a copy of a document proving your address, and pay the adoption fee of 473 pesos for a dog, or 250 pesos for a cat. The animals are delivered sterilized, vaccinated, and dewormed.

You could also donate directly to one of the two organizations permanently involved with this center; Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals, and Dog 4 Life.

Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals is a group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to the well-being of the homeless pets staying at the municipally operated shelter. This No-Kill shelter is staffed by veterinarians and caretakers who work hard to ensure each animal’s basic needs are met. They rely on donations to provide food and medicine to the animals in the care of the shelter. They also manage the work of volunteers at the shelter every Wednesday and Saturday. Donations of time, supplies, or in the form of cash would be much appreciated.

Would you like to join the group of volunteers of Friends of PV Animals?

As a volunteer you will see the joy abandoned dogs experience when you lend them a helping hand, or the excitement of the homeless cats when they are pampered. Some of these animals were someone's pets before and they need attention. The reward for the volunteer's work is on the faces of animals in the few minutes of human warmth they receive.

During the high season (from November to April) some foreign friends, temporary residents and tourists, join them but in the summer they have fewer people and that is when more volunteers are needed.

They begin their work every Wednesday and Saturday around 9:00 am. The main task is to walk the dogs that spend all their time locked in their kennels. They also assist in feeding dogs, cats and occasionally bathing some of them. Sometimes they perform other tasks like cleaning cages or washing dishes; in short, whatever is needed.

Dog 4 Life is a small organization of volunteers dedicated to give the street and shelter dogs of Mexico a fighting chance. Dog For Life started a feeding program to help the strays and families with dogs during the pandemic, in April of 2020 by making feeding tubes that they fill daily in certain areas. This is done with the help of donations which are in great need to keep the program going. They have also teamed up with Sula rescue to open a huge shelter in Ixtapa, and currently house over 80 dogs and pups. It is a dream of theirs to have this sanctuary shelter and would be happy to receive your visit.

Dog For Life is a very small non-profit volunteer rescue group who work and live in Puerto Vallarta and have ties in Victoria. Dog For Life differs from other, larger rescue groups in that they personally work with each dog, and are part of their entire journey from the shelter in Puerto Vallarta to their “furever” homes. They take great care in ensuring the animals are well and placed in the best possible homes.

Your donations go to a worthy cause, and all of your donations go to the welfare of the animals. Thank You for Your Support!
