Julio Cesar Martinez Faces Joel Cordova for World Flyweight Title this Saturday in Guadalajara

Next Saturday, June 26, the Dome of the Alcalde Sports Center in Guadalajara will host the world championship function that will face Julio César “Rey” Martínez and Joel Córdova for the world flyweight championship of the World Boxing Council.

The evening was organized by Matchroom Boxing, Canelo Promotions, Clase y Talento, with the support of the state and municipal government, and will be broadcast on the DAZN platform.

The announcement was made in the Cabildo Room of the Guadalajara City Council, in a ceremony headed by the interim municipal president, Eduardo Martínez Lomelí.

“Guadalajara is firmly committed to promoting sports talent. Sport promotes health, physical activity, family life, but also inspires children and young people to get ahead. We are very proud to receive this great event, supported by Saúl Álvarez and Eddy Reynoso. We are sure that Saturday will be a great boxing function,”said the mayor of Guadalajara.

The General Director of CODE Jalisco, Fernando Ortega Ramos, pointed out that having this function in Guadalajara with a top-level promoter such as Matchroom Boxing consolidates a work started a few years ago in the state capital.

“From the state government, we have maintained the route of promoting boxing. It is a project that began a few years ago and today, thanks to continuity, has been consolidated. We understand the great scope that boxing has, its social impact. We've brought gyms and functions across the state, fueling local talent. Today, we position Guadalajara as a very interesting national and international square for boxing and also, with the best coach in the world, Eddy Reynoso, and the best pound for pound on the planet, Saúl Álvarez.”

The best pound for pound on the planet, the world's leading boxing figure, Jalisco Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, said he was happy to return to his home, though now as a promoter, providing opportunities that other fighters do not have.

"Thank you all for your support. I'm very happy to be in Guadalajara, now as a promoter, to give the fighters opportunities. At the time, I would have liked to have this same support. I tell all the boxers that they are going to go as far as they want, that they take advantage of the opportunities, Saturday's is one of them. Boxing is the sport that has given Mexico the most glory and I hope that on Saturday people will support these young fighters, ”said the WBC, WBO and WBA super middleweight world champion.

Recognized as the best coach in the world, Eddy Reynoso assured that both he, Saúl, and his father, José “Chepo” Reynoso, will continue working to generate more Mexican world boxing champions.

“We are very happy because we started this project many years ago and Julio César Martínez, who is going to fight this Saturday, was here in the beginning. We are very proud that Jalisco has the best boxer in the world and we will continue to work for the benefit of boxing, making more champions.”

The protagonist of the evening this Saturday, Julio César “Rey” Martínez, who will be facing Joel Cordova in a flyweight title fight this Saturday, said he was happy for the opportunity and promised to give a show to the Guadalajara public.

“Grateful to all those who make it possible for me to star in this function in Guadalajara. I will leave everything on the ring, as always, you can be sure,"said the WBC fly world monarch.

On behalf of Matchroom Boxing, Orin Pearce assured that there will be more functions of his company in our country.

“We are excited to be in Mexico, working with Saúl Álvarez and Eddy Reynoso, in this very special place, and we hope to show his great boxing talent. It is an honor to bring this event to Guadalajara and we are waiting for you on Saturday night.”

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez assured that he wants to fight again in Guadalajara, with his people and in his hometown, and he hopes that day will come soon.

“In fact, I wanted to fight in February, but the pandemic did not allow it. I have the disposition, I want to fight before my people, and I know that one day it will happen. It is a matter of sitting down and talking so that it can be done,” said the world monarch.

In addition, he assured that he is also in his plans to conquer all the world super middleweight titles. The only one he doesn't have is the International Boxing Federation, held by undefeated American Caleb Plant.

“Yes of course, I want to unify in super middle. The IBF championship is held by Caleb Plant, but I want to unify. What is certain is that there have not been negotiations yet, but it is also a matter of sitting down to talk."
