LANDSCALE Project Promotes Sustainable Agricultural Development

LANDSCALE Project Promotes Sustainable Agricultural Development

The Landscale project to regulate protected agriculture in the Tapalpa Plateau took another step towards its formalization with the integration of several municipalities.

The Landscale project covers four pillars: ecosystems, human well-being, governance and production. The goal is to collaborate across sectors to address these challenges and drive sustainability at scale.

This action will allow the implementation of public policies that favor land use planning and sustainable development in the Sierra de Tapalpa region.

This was expressed by the head of the office of the Jalisco Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER,) Salvador Álvarez García, while participating in an inter-institutional meeting. The project’s objectives include reconciling productive investments with the conservation of biodiversity and the mountain landscape, along with the generation of opportunities for the population involved.

The official said that this working meeting brought continuity to the agreement of the Government of Jalisco with the Rainforest Alliance organization, in order to advance the project. The Rainforest Alliance seal, the little green frog, is an internationally recognized symbol of environmental, social and economic sustainability. Rainforest Alliance has a presence in 70 countries, in crops such as coffee, banana, cocoa, oil, forest products and livestock. In Mexico they have 23 agricultural products, among which stand out; tomato, coffee, watermelon, flowers, and others.

In addition to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and Territorial Development of Jalisco (SEMADET,) the municipalities of San Gabriel, Tapalpa, Atemajac de Brizuela, and Chiquilistlán; also present was a representative of the company Driscoll's, a leading firm in the commercialization of berries, the Association of Avocado Producers and Exporters of Jalisco (APEAJAL,) several Local Livestock Associations, and the organization Mujeres Unidas de San Gabriel.

It was agreed that after the elaboration of several diagnoses, a series of consultancies will be carried out to assume specific commitments on the part of the actors involved.
