Lactation Room Inaugurated at the Guachimontones Interpretive Center Increases Inclusivity

As an initial effort to achieve more inclusive spaces for breastfeeding within the entity's museum spaces, the first lactation room was opened in the Guachimontones Interpretive Center.

The inauguration of the space that has all the comforts and characteristics so that visiting women who require it can breastfeed their children in a suitable and dignified environment, took place this Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at the archaeological site where they also opened the permanent exhibition “La Casita Prehispánica.”

Joanna Santillán, Coordinator of the Volunteering of the State of Jalisco, mentioned that for her "it is very significant to inaugurate this lactation (place) because for me, breast milk means love, turned into food, and what better than a place like this summons love." She emphasized that a lactating child dignifies a practice that should not be missed, "breastfeeding helps our children to grow healthy in every way."

Joanna Santillán, made a recognition to the authorities for the work carried out in the lactation room, and recalled that in Jalisco they have started a network of workers to promote growth of a safe and healthy childhood.

The head of the SC, Lourdes González, expressed: “It is a pleasure to inaugurate this space because inclusion is a commitment for Jalisco Culture, and breastfeeding has to be in all possible spaces. This lactation room sets a very important precedent for all cultural spaces, for our theaters, for our forums; today the message is an invitation to reflect on the fact that we are a society that demands a lot from mothers, but sometimes we lack a lot of empathy excluding them from public spaces in such an important moment as breastfeeding.”

Lourdes González reported that within the museums of Jalisco, more and more spaces like this will be opened and from the Ministry of Culture, the work will be outlined to be "a support and not an obstacle" in promoting the development of mothers of Jalisco.

“We are convinced that this place was created so that museums are increasingly those spaces where not only those artistic projects converge, but also dialogue and culture, generating new experiences that lead us to build new identities where empathy is the common denominator.” said Miriam Villaseñor.
