Today we got some yummy barbacoa from Tacos Doña Nena.
Hello, again. My dad and I, and sometimes my mom comes along too, have been going out on the town to find some of the best hole in the wall, off the beaten path cheap eats restaurants that we can find. We go out almost every day, finding some new little place to tell you about and review the food and prices.
Today my dad and I were going into town, and we wanted to stop some place, and then my dad thought of these really good barbacoa tacos. But, the stand was in the opposite direction, so we quickly turned around to go see if they were open. My dad was really happy when he saw they were, so he pulled over and we went to get some tacos.
The place is called Tacos Doña Nena, and is located in La Primavera on Calle Fresno. They are open form 8:00am to 2:30-3:00pm, depending on if the day is busy. The longitude latitude location is 20.630974306095894, -105.21125460041318, and they do deliveries, but only on Sundays.
Tacos Doña Nena mainly offer barbacoa, but on Sunday they also do menudo blanco. They normally have a water of the day, but by the time we got there they were all out. Though they also have bottled water and sodas. Actually, they have a really cheap promotion that is 3 tacos, 1 consume, and one 500 ml soda for 65 pesos, or a little over 3 dollars.
My dad got 2 barbacoa tacos dorados, and I got 2 barbacoa tacos blanditos. If you don’t know what barbacoa is, it’s very similar to birria but without any exotic spices such as cinnamon and clove, and way less greasier. It’s much more of a meat flavor, but of course with salt and pepper, and a little bit or garlic and onion. The owner, Doña Nena, got this recipe form her brother who had been using it for 10 years, and she has been using it for 3 years. So over time the recipe, with a couple alternations, has been used for over 13 years!
The little stand actually started out with seafood , such as ceviche, but because the price of fish was, and still is, so unsteady, Doña Nena had to keep changing the prices, which she didn’t like doing. So she switched to serving barbacoa, but the stand is still the same. The stand itself is pretty small, but big enough for a fridge, some shelves, and a cooking area. And it has a little bar with a long bench where people can sit, or there are two tables on the side of the stand.
